Our Approach to Stuttering Treatment
We believe stuttering is a learned behavior, just like fluent speech. This means it can be unlearned and replaced with fluent speech patterns. This understanding is backed by years of research in the PaBaSAT study, where we investigated the nature of stuttering and developed effective treatment methods. Our approach is effective for the vast majority of people who stutter. If a neurological condition is contributing to stuttering, we recommend consulting with a neurologist.
Unlike traditional therapies that often focus on managing stuttering, we aim to eliminate it. We believe that by identifying and addressing the unique speech patterns that contribute to stuttering, lasting fluency is possible.
Everyone who stutters develops unconscious speech patterns that include stuttering. These patterns aren't always obvious, as stuttering doesn't always occur on the same sounds or words. Our approach involves carefully analyzing an individual's speech to pinpoint these specific patterns.
Once identified, these patterns can be addressed through targeted training. This leads to significant and rapid improvement. In fact, 85% of our long-term participants who underwent this pattern-based treatment describe themselves as stutter-free for at least two years after completing the program.
Identifying these individual patterns is a complex process. To make this easier, we're developing software that can analyze speech samples and help identify these patterns. This involves creating a mathematical representation of a vast number of speech and stuttering patterns to develop pattern recognition algorithms.
